This is the smallest and lightest full autonomous UAV ever build recently launched in June 2016. Powered using APM MINI V3.1 and APM MINI PRO (Second built Z-84) on opensource ARDUPLANE V3.4. Concentrating building the most portable, simple yet long range UAV platform at minimal cost and little power source. After completing all the test and flight mission over long distance flight it is proven that this small flying winged have breaked the ice as the first smallest plane to achieve longest flight distance based on size, weight and power efficiency exceeded performance of existing build like its competitor the Mini Volantex Ranger and the Drifter Ultralight V5. Z-84 build continue spawn more variant because it was easier and cheaper to build and have the most simplified hardware ever assembled. This is 100% full Autonomous version of the ES Drifter Ultralight known as "UAV ES DRIFTER ULTRALIGHT #3 V5" born 5 year later after the birth of #1 and #2. The 3rd sibling and revision 5 build equipped with Open source APM (APM mini Pro) Ardupilot flight controller with Arduplane V3.4 firmware during its build and 2 way data telemetry communication to computing devices on the ground. Flown almost same characteristic as the original platform characteristic with more load, self flying capability and can flown without radio link or known as "silent flight". Loaded with 5000mah up to 5200mah 3s 35C lipo it can fly longer range 24km~ flight trip by itself while ground pilot/crew can monitor its flight status through data telemetry link without needed to manually control the plane. The plane have a flight system characteristic of the smaller version of military grade UAV drone. Acquired somewhere mid APRIL 2016, this is RANGER 747-5 made by VOLANTEX RC company. 1380mm wingspan, made from tought durable EPO foam and its flies like a glider...quite floaty too. Currently build as a full UAV platform autonomous flight with flight setup similar to 3rd unit of UAV- Drifter Ultralight #3 -v5. Runs on 3DR based APM (arduplane) flight controller for autonomous flight system capable. Most of its flight are pure autonomous but it does have FPV capable as minor use. Month after it was build the RANGER 757-4 successfully flown many long range autonomous mission into rural and remote places breaking distance record for solo and radio independent flight and also the first UAV model in my hangar that fully utilised the use of Li-On battery instead of standard Li-Po for long range flight. ES Drifter Ultralight, a scale model platform acquired from hobbyking.com which i converted into FPV flight capable system via DIY build which feature autonomous GPS flight hardware, 808 #16 keychain modded cam HD recording with video output, head tracking camera pan system, 7~12KM video and flight control powered on single 3s 11.1v 2200mah lipo which could sustain flight duration up to 35~40 minutes. Made from lightweight EPO foam, carbon fibre/plastic skelleton frame, with wingspan 950mm and full flight weight of 760gram. It had the best smooth and relaxing flight for its size. Art-tech P-51D Mustang, a small scale warbird model platform acquired from hobbyking.com which i converted into FPV flight capable system.
DIY build which feature autonomous GPS flight hardware, 808 #16 keychain modded cam HD recording with video output, head tracking camera pan system, 7~12KM video and flight control powered on single 3s 11.1v 2200mah lipo which could sustain flight duration up to 25~35 minutes with 4 bladed props. Made from lightweight brittle EPS foam with wingspan of 960mm and full flight weight of 820gram. It has the best scale warbird feeling flight view above the wings providing a true a real like in cockpit flight of an American P-51D Mustang. On late 2013, this small scale warbird break the record for the first smallest and true full FPV capable scaled model flight based on the size, weight ratio and distance covered which originally was dominated by bigger winged glider and non-scaled models of the same flight capabilities and onboard hardware. Art-tech Pitts Special, a small scale chubby looking acrobatic model platform acquired from hobbyking.com which i converted into FPV flight capable system.
DIY build which feature autonomous GPS flight hardware, 808 #16 keychain modded cam HD recording with video output, head tracking camera pan system, 6~10KM video and flight control powered on single 3s 11.1v 2200mah lipo which could sustain flight duration up to 25~30 minutes with 4 bladed props. Made from lightweight brittle EPS foam with wingspan of 860mm and full flight weight of 840gram. This bi-winged plane are very manouverable, agile and have best exhilarating view mimic like stunt flyer cockjpit view. Foward view are much obstructed due to double wing but mostly best foward reference flight are on the side view giving a real like challenging flight from the back of the wings. Its was nice to see both aileron moving and have no problem on STOL operation. Best flight is over the ocean where it can obtain maximum constant wing lift and better runtime. Its comes second for best STOL after my ES Drifter.
By 2014 there are two FPV Pitts: Version 2 and Version 3. The "Version 2" was build in late 2012 and retired by end of 2013. "Version 3" is a new build with lighter parts and builds, reduced surplus hardware, improve power management/consumption and better flight range and performance, currently active along side with P-51D Mustang and ES Drifter. Drone also can connect telemetrically on my android smartphone via EZ-GUI apps. The DJI Phantom has become a household name in drone technology for civilian. I got my hand on these since for being "convenient" and save me time building a complete FPV setup unlike my old Q450 APM build. Despite being ready to fly out of the box ideally designed for aerial video and photography due to its stability, well balanced rotor and minimal vibration all tuned well by the manufacturer which is good news and save me much headache. Took a week to convert it into FPV specification and on its 1st month of activity it has produced superb aerial footage and images which is very artistic and aspiring photos that inspire me to appreciate things and living things around me. The PHANTOM truly open up new frontier world of discovery of beautiful thing from above. However being setup as FPV it still lack of range and endurance when compare against my previous flying UAV/FPV machine but i can understand PHANTOM was design to help me put some color on blank canvas. This is generic 450 size quad copter frame from hobby king also known as clone of DJI 450. I build it out of curiousity and experimental purposes.
Equipped with open source Ardupilot 2.5 flight controler with Neo-6M GPS, MinimOSD v1.1, APM power module, Simonk ESCs, 800kv motors, GWS blades, 808 #16 HD cam with video out, radio and video transmission capable of 5km of flight. Able to control both with radio controller and android tablet for waypoint, RTH and autonomous flight planner.
I don't fly these much but just for fun wondering around the forest and beaches. 450 size is too big for park flying by my standard and for long range flight i'd opt for a plane instead. The fact i don't fly much i do reserve it for future heavy duty aerial photography and movie creation purposes as it can carry heavy camera load. This quad originally marketted for kids to play around the house both indoor and out-door via line of sight with sad looking plastic lady bug shell above the frame. Manufacturer under WL-TOYS model named as V929. This small palm size toy was the first popular hand size multirotor made for public before spawn a bunch of new generation of quads after it.
With some ingenius ideas and creativity i convert it into hobby grade professional FPV flying machine...or publicly called micro drones. It took me 5 hours to convert this into DIY FPV machine cable of both indoor and outdoor. Equipped with nano CMOS 520TVL cam, 90 deg lens, 808 #16 HD cam underneath for video recording, nano video transmitter, Clover Leaf antenna and extra 1s lipo for video transmission operation. Pairing with Turnigy 9X radio and video goggle this home made small and plastic durable FPV machine capable to fly 1km of flight radius in open area and also small enough to roam indoor and various obstacles that bigger multirotor couldn't. After shedding some unnecessary parts it weight only 69 grams with approximately 12 minutes worth of flight time. Rotor to rotor size is 160mm. Its durable, small and best close encounter flight machine. This is my favorite flight machine that i took around with me in the park, office or any places where small size matters. At the time of build this CHEERSON CX-10 modded with FPV equipped wireless nano camera consider to be world smallest home build civilian drone/FPV as by date on August 2014. The project meant to be experimental to prove concept of Nano drone flight with basic remotely video operated surveillance is possible. The quad rotor size is extremely small 40mm x 40mm cubic in size able to fit almost any place inside your pocket or match boxes with full flying weight below 15 gram.
With current setup the Nano quad rotor only capable for indoor flight geared for fun and tiny curiosity in mind. It was quite challenging to build but as for me and our sponsor BANGGOOD.COM we did enjoy proving something that was out of the box ideas. Looking forward for Star Wars POD like racing? Small, portable, budget and fast tree zig zagger? Here the latest mini size rotor that hits the streets that everyone is craving about this year (i'm not... just curious). I dig in because i was curious about trendy and fads about mini quad racing so i pickup one, building and fly solo (cos no one in my local started it yet), by the year 2015 FPV 250 size is a huge hit among multirotor fans especially new comers because its cheaper and yet wide available after market parts. Its was fun for a while, got the need for speed, low ground proximity flight and things you can only do with smaller stuff. Blitz RC's SKY SURFER or known on other brand as Hobby King BIXLER. My first FPV platform to start my FPV experience years ago, believe to be most popular beginners platform to start for FPV acitivity due to its size and forgivable handling performance....in later years i realised that was most crappiest platform i ever flown and will never replace with true FPV performance flight. The wings are huge with dihedral wing tip for stability and gliding performance. Its slow and fly sluggish like a cow as trade off for stabilty. Can glide up in the air for 25-40 minutes in the air. Equipped with 520TVL CCD cam, pan-tit mechanism for head tracking system link to my video goggle through gyro sensing, G-OSDII module for basic information layout on the screen, 2200mah 3s lipo battery for overall power supply, 6x servos operation, video transmission and radio good for 1.5km intermediate flight. Was short lived because i out grow my skills and move own to more advance level. Had around 20 cycle of flight and discarded it as its too heavy and draggy. Due to its weight its a major burden for 9g servo control. Its was a great experienced and today they still market it as popular choice for basic started FPV platform. Art-tech/Hobby King COOTA seaplane is 930mm winspan plane made from EPS foam, very lightweight small and portable plane. I acquired from my friends and convert it into flying FPV machine. Stock plane component powered with 3S 1000mah lipo battery with added 520TVL mini cmos cam, simple pan servo for pan viewing, HK Mini-OSD module for on screen layout display with radio and video transmitter worth 1.5km of flight performance sight. The plane with modded air ramp on top of the wing and semi flap underneath could perform short take of and landing (STOL) and able to float, take off and landing off the water too. Its AXN Floater Jet (Cloud Fly) glider plane. My second FPV build, known as "The chaser" at my local flight field build to intercept and dogfight during our fun flight with my buddies. I got the main frame from Hobbyking.com and usually best as platform to glide or sloap soaring with the wind or at the beaches. Fast plane but not as acrobatic like my Pitts Special. Equipped with basic FPV requirement such as Pan-Tilt cam via head tracking system on my video goggle, 22000mah 3s lipo for main power, stock servos, G-OSDII module for screen info layout (HUD) 30A esc, vtx and radio good for 1.5km range. Had so much fun chasing around out R/C pilot planes as depicted from our Video section in this site. Short lived half a year later and scrapped it out from my collection because of overweight issue not an idea platform for long range flight. This is the most simple, basic and park fly range fun FPV plane. Sold under the branding "HK TRISTANIA 3D" epp I got it from HobbyKing.com and convert it into super lightweight FPV platform for simple flight around the park. Not only it able to zig zag around tight spot around trees, spin around and doing cool almost stationary stunt but it also capable to fly around 1.5km range floating around like a wool of cotton. Made out of thin spongy EPP foam and few bit of electronics. Hardware include basics 4ch radio requirement and a set of DIY nano video transmitter build, 520 TVL CMOS cam with 120 degree wide angle lenses for wide angle viewing around tight spots. Winngspan at 845mm weight less than 250 gram. This was my second basic and budget FPV built not only cheap DIY but comes with lots of flying fun.
